    Dear Praying Friends,

Mayfia has not had and easy life -
    Mayfia finds Hope

Her father died when she was four, and she has been in the custody of two different Aunt's before being returning to her Mother two years ago. At 10 years old, she has only completed 1st grade, and she has not been to school the past two years, due to finances.

When her unemployed, single mother got pregnant this spring, she decided to send Mayfia away to her father's family in a far away village. Mayfia was very frightened, and ran away. Her mother refused to look for her. Thankfully she was returned by another Aunt (from a distant city where the girl had fled) who tried to keep her mother from sending Mayfia away. The Aunt fears these extended family members will use her as free labor around the house and farm, leaving her uneducated and hopeless concerning her future.

Mayfia is a sensitive and gentle girl, who is scared and very vulnerable right now. Her mother does not want her, and is willing for her to be adopted into a family. We have partnered with another organization looking for a Christian family who can love and accept Mayfia as she is, who will work to give her hope and a future. In the mean time, we will be feeding and caring for Mayfia, and helping her catch up on some of her missed schooling during the days.

Sadly, Mayfia's story is not unusual in Ghana
Children Hawking Water street side in Accra

Children are often passed among family members, and can be used as laborers in the house and farms, or to sell merchandise on the street. Many are abused and neglected, and the children's needs are rarely considered. Although educational reforms are happening, many girls are still not being given an education due to the cost of necessary supplies.

The Central Region is the 3rd poorest region in Ghana, and child traffickers take advantage of desperate families to purchase children to work in the fisheries on Lake Volta. (Please click on and read "Daily Graphic" newspaper article dated 18th May, "16 children reunite with families" the children are from a village very close to the area we will be living and working in.)

When our Social Worker gave us a list of the 100 most vulnerable children in the district - most of them were in sibling groups where there was no Father, and the single mother is unable to provide for her children.

We need your help to establish:

    • A sustainable way to empower these families to care for their own children,
    • A safe environment for the children who can not stay with their families, and
    • Secure and stable families for the most desperate children to grow and develop in.

    Rain, rain, go away…
    House Built on sinking sand

The Ghanaians in the Northern Regions suffered through a drought this summer, and have been flooded with torrential downpours in September. Many homes which are made out of packed clay, have been eroded and washed away. The regions are made up of subsistence farmers, who have lost their homes and crops in the flood, are now facing a famine.

31 people have lost their lives, 19,621 homes have collapsed, 90,703 people are homeless

Please pray for the people affected by these disasters, and those working to help them. There are many organizations distributing food, clothing, and other needed items.

If you would like to make a special donation to these flood victims, you can send it to GWMI with a note for 'flood victims' and we will forward all monies to Christian organizations already working in these devastated areas.*

    In Conclusion

Thank you for your prayers, and support! For the Orphans of Africa,

    Larry & Beki
